NEW POLL: The Republican Party Is More Unpopular Than It Has Been In At Least 20 Years

A new poll from Gallup shows the popularity of the Republican Party is lower now than in the disastrous last days of the Bush administration, lower than when they pursued impeachment of Bill Clinton, and lower than during the government shutdowns of the mid-1990s. With 28 percent approval, Republicans’ favorability is lower than at any time since Gallup began asking the question in 1993.

At 43 percent favorable versus 49 unfavorable, the Democratic Party isn’t faring well in the shutdown either, with its favorable number dropping by 4 points in the last week. But at 28 percent favorable and 62 percent unfavorable, the GOP is testing new levels of unpopularity.

“Every piece of evidence we have so far on the government shutdown shows the public is blaming Republicans most of all for the standoff,” The New York Post‘s conservative columnist John Podhoretz wrote in his column “Suicide of the Right” on Wednesday, before Gallup released its poll.

A new poll from Democracy Corps and Women’s Voices Women Vote Action Fund shows that House Republicans are close to the lowest point it has ever recorded, at 51 percent disapproval.
